Depending on the heat source (water, air, ground) that you can use and what you want to heat (water, air or both), there are different models of heat pumps available. Some are more suitable for homes located in cities.
The advantage of this system is its low energy consumption. Although it is difficult to estimate the average annual consumption of a heat pump, it differs from traditional heating systems in that it extracts heat rather than producing it.
The principle behind a heat pump is simple: it draws heat from the surrounding environment (water, air, soil) and releases it in the form of heat into the heating system to which it is connected.

What types of heat pumps are available?
There are different types of heat pumps:
- Air-to-water heat pump;
- Water-to-water heat pump;
- Air-to-air heat pump
Some are even equipped with air conditioning for the summer.
Heat pumps draw energy from:
- In the ground (geothermal heat pump);
- In groundwater (aquathermal heat pump);
- Or in the outside air (aerothermal heat pump).
At Frigotech, a cutting-edge company based in Brussels, we offer our customers a wide range of ultra-economical and high-performance appliances.
To better satisfy our customers, we only work with the best brands on the European market, including:
Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric. This allows us to guarantee you reliable, optimal, efficient air conditioning with

Everything you need to know about heat pumps
By the Frigotec editorial team
Are you looking to replace your heating system and interested in heat pumps? How they work, different models, costs, financial assistance available… Frigotec explains everything you need to know before taking the plunge.
Qu'est-ce qu'une pompe à chaleur ?
A heat pump is an environmentally friendly heating solution. Not only does it heat your home, but in some cases it can also produce domestic hot water.
It works on a simple principle: capturing free energy from outside the house and transferring it inside via radiators, underfloor heating or fan coil units, depending on the system chosen.
💡 Drawing its energy from nature, the heat pump consumes little and produces a lot. The result? Savings of up to 60% on your heating bill!
How does a heat pump work?
The CAP works thanks to an ingenious system that captures calories present in the air, soil or water source. These calories are then converted to heat your home. This natural cycle provides efficient and sustainable heating.
🌊 What about your swimming pool?
A heat pump can also heat your swimming pool water. However, this installation requires plumbing work carried out by a certified professional such as Frigotec.
The different types of heat pumps
The air source heat pump
It extracts heat from the outside air and redistributes it indoors. There are two main types of air source heat pumps:
Air-to-air heat pump: only heats the ambient air in the home.
Air-to-water heat pump: heats the home and produces domestic hot water.
1. PAC lucht-lucht
This system transports outside air indoors via electrically powered fan coil units. Some models are reversible, offering an air conditioning mode in summer.
📢 Less efficient in winter, air-to-air heat pumps may require additional heating in Belgium during the coldest days.
2. Air-to-water heat pump
It recovers calories from the outside air to heat the water in your heating system, compatible with radiators or underfloor heating. It can also produce hot water for sanitary needs.
📢 This system has its limitations when temperatures drop below 0°C, particularly in winter in Brussels. In the event of extreme cold (around -7°C), an additional boiler is strongly recommended.
The geothermal heat pump
This type of heat pump uses the heat stored in the ground in your garden. Using underground sensors, it extracts this energy and distributes it to your heating or hot water system.
There are two possible installation methods:
Horizontal collection: suitable if your land is at least twice the size of your house. The collectors are buried between 60 cm and 1.20 m deep.
Vertical collection: ideal for small plots of land, with probes reaching depths of up to 100 metres, unaffected by temperature variations.
👉 The main advantage: geothermal heat pumps operate all year round without additional heating. The disadvantage: extensive drilling work and high costs.
The hydrothermal heat pump
If you have a water source near your home (lake, groundwater, etc.), this heat pump can extract heat from it to supply your home and domestic hot water.
In summer, some systems even allow you to reverse the cycle to cool your home.
💰 Work that is worth the investment
Installing a hydrothermal heat pump requires administrative procedures in Belgium and double drilling to avoid any risk of the resource drying up. But once operational, it can reduce your heating and hot water costs by a factor of five.
Installation and maintenance of a heat pump
Installation begins with the installation of the outdoor unit, which is usually mounted on a wall of the house (for air source heat pumps) or buried in the ground in the case of ground source heat pumps.
Frigotec then installs the indoor unit (or split units) and connects the units. Once these steps have been completed, your heat pump can be commissioned.
Before any installation, a technical site visit is essential. This allows Frigotec to verify the feasibility of the project and calculate the power required for your home.
Maintenance: a key step
To ensure the longevity and performance of your heat pump, regular maintenance is essential:
Every 2 years for heat pumps between 4 kW and 70 kW
Every 5 years for those above 70 kW
Frigotec offers tailored maintenance contracts. Allow for an annual budget of €150 to €250 depending on your model. With proper maintenance, a heat pump can last up to 17 years.
What financial assistance is available in Belgium?
Good news! In Belgium, as in Brussels, the installation of a heat pump is eligible for various energy subsidies, as it contributes to the ecological transition:
Regional energy allowance
Renovation bonus in Brussels
VAT rate reduced to 6% for dwellings over 10 years old
Eco-friendly financing through green loans
Contact Frigotec to find out what assistance is available in your area.

It captures calories from the outside air and releases them into your home. It can be air-to-air (heating only) or air-to-water (heating + hot water). Air-to-air heat pumps are less efficient in winter, while air-to-water heat pumps require additional support during periods of extreme cold in Brussels.
What is a geothermal pump?
This model draws energy from the ground. Very stable and efficient all year round, it requires a more costly installation involving drilling into the ground.
What is a hydrothermal pump?
It captures heat from groundwater or another nearby water source. Ideal for homes located near water resources, it does, however, require specific procedures and work.
When should I service my heat pump?
Every two years for classic models.
Every 5 years for high-powered models.
Maintenance is essential to ensure the safety and performance of your appliance.

WHAT IS A HEAT PUMP?
A heat pump is a device that extracts heat from the ground or the air and transfers it to a building, a water-based heating system or a ventilation system. Like a refrigerator, a heat pump consists of a refrigeration circuit that transfers energy through a change in the state (liquid or gas) of the fluid used. Heat or cool air is then “pumped” directly into the air or ground (or groundwater) according to the principle of thermal energy transfer. Heat pumps are equipped with a reversible system that allows them to heat or cool a space.
When choosing your heat pump for installation, there are mainly three types of devices:
aerothermal (air/air and air/water), hydrothermal (water/water) and geothermal (ground).
The air-to-air aerothermal heat pump
This type of air-to-air heat pump (sometimes also called R/R) draws heat from the air and converts it into energy by pumping warm air into the house. Air-to-air pumps capture calories from the outside air and release them into a space in the form of warm air. The advantage of an air-to-air heat pump is that many models are also reversible and can therefore be used as air conditioners in summer.
Air-to-water aerothermal heat pump
Air-to-water heat pumps (also known as R/O pumps) draw heat from the air and transfer it to the water in a heating system (underfloor heating, radiators, etc.). The biggest advantage of this type of heat pump is undoubtedly its ease of use and installation. When installing an air-to-water heat pump, the system can easily replace an existing boiler. It is often unnecessary to change the heating system or radiators. An air-to-air heat pump is also adaptable, meaning it can be installed in new or renovated homes (flats or houses).
The water/water hydrothermal heat pump
If you have a water source near your home, you can opt to install a water/water (or O/O) hydrothermal heat pump. This type of pump draws heat from water in a well or groundwater and redistributes it throughout the home’s heating system. Many hydrothermal heat pumps are also reversible, making them ideal for cooling in summer. Water/water heat pumps can have horizontal sensors, buried at a shallow depth to cover a large area, or vertical sensors, buried deep to cover a smaller area.
The geothermal heat pump
Unlike the other two types of heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps draw heat from the ground using pipes buried in a garden or courtyard. The liquid circulating through these pipes absorbs the heat, which is then used to raise the temperature of the water used for heating or domestic purposes.
Thanks to the installation of a heat pump, being environmentally friendly goes hand in hand with saving money!
When replacing an energy-intensive heating system, during an innovation project or even at the start of building a house, many people in Belgium call on Frigotech as their heat pump installer. Heat pumps are a particularly efficient, economical and environmentally friendly heating solution, and many devices also have an air conditioning function (reversible system).
Installing a heat pump is primarily a way to reduce your energy bill. Using nature as an energy source is beneficial in every way, which is the main advantage of a heat pump as a heating/air conditioning system. It is also an opportunity to make the transition to renewable energies, which are strongly encouraged by the government. The Brussels-Capital Region, Wallonia and Flanders offer several energy subsidies to encourage everyone to heat their homes using environmentally friendly methods.
Heat pumps offer numerous advantages, but one of the most important is their low-temperature operation, which allows for significant savings on electricity consumption. As true experts in heat pump installation in Belgium, our company works with both private individuals and professionals.
