An air handling unit is a technical component designed for heating, cooling, humidifying or dehumidifying commercial or industrial premises. It is an all-air system with constant or variable flow.
An AHU is either a monobloc type or consists of modules added together, depending on the configuration, such as ventilation modules, cold and hot coil modules, filter modules, etc.
There are two types of air handling units:
– Single-flow AHUs, which are either all fresh air, all return air, or a mixture of both flows.
– Dual-flow AHUs, which allow for all possible combinations of return air, fresh air, exhaust air, and treated air, depending on the configuration.

Details of a single-flow air handling unit

Components of a single-flow air handling unit:

AIR HANDLING UNIT

Fresh air intake (Fresh air damper + Fresh air sensor)

Outside air enters through the motorised fresh air vent, which is controlled according to requirements. A sensor measures the temperature of the incoming air.

Mixing chamber (if applicable)

In sommige eenvoudige configuraties is er geen mengkamer. Als er echter wel een mengkamer aanwezig is, kan deze worden gebruikt om een mengsel van verse lucht en retourlucht te doseren om het energieverbruik te optimaliseren.

Filtration

The air flows through filters (usually G4 + F7 or M5 + F7), which remove particles, dust and pollen. A filter switch monitors the level of contamination.

Treatment batteries (heating and/or cooling)

Two batteries are powered:

🔴 Warme batterij (V3V warm): verwarmt de lucht volgens de instelling.

🔵 Cold battery (V3V cold): used in summer to cool the air.
The antifreeze thermostat protects the warm battery from freezing.

Fire hatch (safety)

It cuts off the air supply in the event of a fire being detected.

Drip guard
Protects the fan by stopping any condensation that may be present after the cooling coil.

Blower fan (EC motor)

It propels the treated air into the premises. The EC (electronically commutated) motor offers good efficiency and precise speed variation.

The ventilation pressure switch detects a loss of pressure or a fan stoppage.

Blow probe

It controls the temperature of the blown air.

Smoke detector
Automatically shuts down the AHU if smoke is detected.

Automation / Control

Manages instructions, shutter opening, temperature, anomaly detection, alarms (clogged filter, antifreeze, motor fault, etc.).

General operation:

Fresh air is drawn in, filtered, heated or cooled if necessary, and then blown into the rooms to be ventilated. This is a single-flow system, meaning that it blows in fresh air without mechanical extraction. Stale air is removed naturally (through extraction grilles or openings) or by a separate system.

Selecting an air handling unit (AHU) suited to your requirements

Before selecting an air handling unit, it is essential to understand the two main categories available on the market:

  • Single-flow CTAs: these manage a single air flow, whether it is incoming air, outgoing air, or sometimes a mixture of both.

  • Dual-flow CTAs: these systems allow both the injection of fresh outside air and the extraction of stale indoor air. They generally incorporate a heat recovery system, allowing energy from the extracted air to be transferred to the incoming fresh air.

Furthermore, the operation of a CTA can vary according to several modes:

  • cooling only mode,

  • mainly cold weather,

  • balanced hot/cold mode,

  • mainly warm weather.

Air handling units are widely used in professional environments such as hospitals, industrial sites, hotels and shopping centres.
